HARMONY Auto, a Chinese automotive company, has officially launched its operations in Tanzania, supporting the government’s drive to expand the use of renewable energy and promote environmentally friendly transportation across Africa.
The launch marks the introduction of BYD vehicles into the Tanzanian market, offering sustainable transport solutions aimed at improving accessibility and easing transportation challenges for the public.
Speaking during the launch, the company’s Sales Representative, Khatibu Hussein, explained that the BYD Shark 6 is equipped with Plug-in Hybrid technology, which enables the battery to recharge once the fuel is depleted. He noted that the vehicle can travel more than 100 kilometers on electric power alone after a two-hour charge. With high-speed direct current charging, the battery can be fully charged in just 30 minutes.
Hussein added that this technology is expected to be officially rolled out in Tanzania soon, alongside continued private investment in the renewable energy sector.
He further revealed that Harmony Auto’s showroom is located along Nyerere Road near Julius Nyerere International Airport and features a range of Plug-in Hybrid vehicles that operate on both electricity and fuel. These vehicles offer a sustainable and energy-efficient transport solution for communities seeking modern mobility options.
The Director of Harmony Auto for Africa and East Africa stated that the company currently operates four branches across the continent—in South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya, and Tanzania. He also disclosed plans to establish a vehicle manufacturing plant in South Africa and an assembly facility in Tanzania to better suit local driving conditions and support the growth of the electric vehicle industry in Africa.
At present, the vehicles are configured with an English-language system, though plans are underway to introduce a Swahili-language interface in the near future.
Meanwhile, the Sales Manager noted that the company’s warehouse stocks a wide range of vehicles, including BYD Shark 6 double-cabin pickups, mini SUVs, and luxury models.
BYD is internationally recognized for its advanced, durable, and highly safe battery technology, a key factor attracting customers seeking renewable energy-powered vehicles.
The establishment of Harmony Auto’s Tanzanian branch represents a major milestone in advancing eco-friendly transportation and reinforces ongoing efforts to enhance transport systems and renewable energy adoption across Africa.
