Kenya's commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has been reiterated by President William Ruto, who has described the framework as essential to increasing intra-African trade and opening up economic opportunities throughout the continent.
The President stated that greater trade integration was essential to Africa's economic transformation and the expansion of both public and private sector businesses in comments made following discussions with AfCFTA Secretary-General Wamkele Mene at State House in Nairobi.
"Increasing intra-African trade and opening doors for both the public and private sectors depends on the African Continental Free Trade Area framework," Ruto stated.
He noted that Kenya is still dedicated to actively supporting the project and praised the AfCFTA Secretariat for its efforts in lowering trade obstacles and facilitating more trade between African nations.
According to Ruto, the government is collaborating closely with the AfCFTA to use the private sector's potential, which he characterized as flexible and in a good position to promote international trade.
He declared, "We are dedicated to working with the free trade area to harness the power and agility of the private sector, recognizing its capacity and expertise as key to increasing trade among countries in our continent."
In addition to trade liberalization, Ruto stated that Kenya is collaborating with the AfCFTA to promote African green industrialization, a strategy meant to encourage investment and trade that is environmentally benign while maintaining economic growth.
“Green industrialisation drives climate-friendly trade and investment, demonstrating that growth and sustainability are not exclusive,†he said.
The President also revealed that Kenya has been asked to host the Africa Green Industrialization Initiative secretariat. This could establish Kenya as a regional center for climate-aligned manufacturing, policy coordination, and investment mobilization.
