To make Eldoret City safer, smarter, and more energy-efficient, Uasin Gishu County plans to implement a Sh3 billion solar-powered street lighting project as part of a public-private cooperation. Two years will be spent on building, followed by thirteen years of operation, upkeep, and eventual county handover as part of the fifteen-year project. To get the opinions of the residents, local involvement forums have been successfully organized in each ward.
A 200-kilometer subterranean network for distribution with fiber optic cable, a 3MWp solar power plant with a 10MWh storage capacity, more than 20,000 adaptive LED streetlights, and smart controls with CCTV integration for remote surveillance and maintenance planning are all part of the plans.
According to Governor Jonathan Bii, the project supports his Nguzo Kumi plan for safer neighborhoods and modern infrastructure. We are illuminating our future, our houses, and our streets. According to Bii, this is going to render Eldoret more secure, more desirable to investors, and a better place to reside for our people.
Claiming security, economic, and quality-of-life positive aspects, the proposal has been warmly accepted by the locals. This will be essential for safeguarding our estates and villages, John Njoroge stated. Anthony Sitienei, an energy executive, stressed the sustainability benefits. We are creating a smarter, greener city, not just putting on lights. Contemporary facilities and lower energy prices will completely transform service delivery.
The county forecasts that the solar lighting infrastructure will boost road safety, prevent carbon emissions in compliance with Kenya's climate commitments, guarantee safe working daylight hours for a dynamic night financial sector, and minimize public lighting expenditures by up to 50%. Despite the proposal's approval by the county assembly, it will be implemented in collaboration with Rayuton Seko Energy Ltd., a Kenya-Czech Republic partnership that provides finance and expertise in the field.
