BasiGo Deploys Hundred Electric Buses in Rwanda and Kenya

Posted on : Wednesday , 6th August 2025

By announcing the rollout of its 100th electric bus in Kenya and Rwanda in East Africa, BasiGo has achieved a noteworthy milestone.

The business started off in Nairobi in 2022 with just two cars, and it has since progressively grown its fleet to include both Nairobi and Kigali public transportation services.

BasiGo now ranks among the biggest electric bus operators in Sub-Saharan Africa as a result of this growth. In an effort to increase local operators' access to electric mobility, the company's buses are incorporated into already-existing public transportation networks and are backed by a Pay-As-You-Drive finance mechanism.

BasiGo claims that its current fleet supports over 1,000 jobs throughout its supply chain and operational activities and carries over 20,000 passengers every day. According to estimates, switching to electric buses from diesel will save about 5,000 liters of diesel per day and cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 250 tonnes per month.

The operations of BasiGo rely on the comparatively high proportion of renewable electricity in East Africa, which is mostly produced by geothermal and hydropower. This foundation of renewable energy plays a significant role in lowering lifecycle emissions and improving the environmental efficiency of the switch to electric public transportation.

With a goal of 1,000 electric buses in the area, the company has stated that it intends to keep growing its business. Although there are still issues with funding, infrastructure, and legislative support, BasiGo's 100-bus milestone shows that electrified transportation is gaining traction in African cities.
