After investing USD 60 million in Ethiopia, Japanese solar panel maker Toyo Solar has started pilot production at its recently constructed facility in the Hawassa Special Economic Zone.
The Industrial Parks Development Corporation of Ethiopia (IPDC) CEO, Fisseha Yitegesu (PhD), recently paid a visit to the facility to evaluate its development. He reiterated IPDC's dedication to helping Toyo Solar transition to full-scale production during his visit. According to company authorities, full manufacturing will start in the middle of March.
The Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) and Toyo Solar signed a memorandum of agreement (MoU) in October 2024, which is the basis for Toyo Solar's investment. The facility will be Toyo Solar's first solar cell production plant in the nation and will occupy three hectares of leased property. It is anticipated to create more than 1,000 permanent jobs and export goods to the US, India, and the Middle East once it is fully operating.
