Sunna Achieves Major Milestone with 30,000 Solar Streetlight Installations in Togo

As part of a public-private partnership (PPP), French company Sunna Design has installed 30,000 solar streetlights in rural Togo, mainly in the Savanes and Kara regions. This initiative, under the PEP’S rural project, is led by the Togolese Agency for Rural Electrification and Renewable Energies (AT2ER) and aims to equip 4,600 villages with sustainable lighting solutions.

Sunna states that these streetlights significantly improve daily life by enhancing safety, facilitating nighttime travel, supporting work and education, and curbing rural exodus through decentralized infrastructure. This project is being implemented under a PPP agreement signed in late 2021 between Sunna and the Togolese government.

Valued at €40 million, the partnership involves Sunna manufacturing the solar streetlights in Bordeaux, France, and shipping them to Togo for installation. Local companies—Acermiitee, Gemas, and Batir Plus—assist in deployment and will provide maintenance for 12 years under the agreement.

Financial support from the French Treasury ensures the project benefits 1.5 million people.

This initiative aligns with Togo’s broader electrification efforts. With a population exceeding 8 million, the country had a 60% electricity access rate in 2021, according to GIZ. The government continues to explore solutions to accelerate rural electrification and improve living conditions.
