H.E. Hiroshi Matsuura, Japanese Ambassador to Kenya, handed over two new projects at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
The new 1.5 Tesla MRI at MTRH's Memorial Wing will increase healthcare service provision to thousands of patients from Western Kenya's 25 counties and beyond.
Ambassador Hiroshi stated in his statement that Japan is pleased to be working with Kenya in various areas of healthcare and added that the new 1.5 Tesla MRI obtained through a Japanese grant to Kenya is one of the projects under the bilateral agreement to improve Kenyan healthcare.
Ambassador Hiroshi also stated that new collaboration areas between Kenya and Japan will be highlighted at the 9th Tokyo Development Conference, which will be held in Yokohama in August 2025 and that Japan is eager to collaborate with Kenya.
He was impressed by MTRH's significant role in providing healthcare for half of Kenya.
He praised the Hospital's leadership, which includes Board Chairman Mr. Sitoyo Lopokoiyit and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa, for continuing to guide the institution that provides healthcare to millions of Kenyans.
The Hospital Board Chair praised the collaboration, stating that the new MRI will improve hospital operations by giving it an advantage in managing the large number of cases received daily.
MTRH CEO praised the collaboration between the Kenyan and Japanese governments through the Ministry of Health, stating that the 2,000 patients who visit MTRH every day will now have access to advanced diagnostics because the hospital is a one-stop shop for all sub-specialized healthcare services.
Dr. Kirwa also urged Kenyans to enrol in the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), noting that it covers all services provided at MTRH.
The representative, who was taken on a guided tour of the Renal Unit, Hemato Oncology and Radiotherapy Centre, praised the Diagnostics Centre and the other specialised services. He then handed over an all-terrain ambulance to the MTRH Board and Management.
