18 MW solar tender is being held in southern end of the archipelago off the coast of Tanzania

The setting up of an 18 MW solar project on the southern end of the islands off the shores of Tanzania is up for bid by Zanzibar's state-owned utility. Applications are due on January 31, 2025.

A tender has been issued by Zanzibar Electricity Corp. (ZECO) to design, supply, and build a solar plant with a minimum capacity of 18 megawatts.

Makunduchi, one of the southernmost cities on the Zanzibar islands a Tanzanian autonomous region will be the site.

The selected developer will also be in charge of the plant's upkeep and operation for three years, and they must train ZECO staff before handover, according to the tender documents.

The World Bank provided funding for the project to the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar through the United Republic of Tanzania.

The cost of the complete bidding paperwork is $250. On January 13, 2025, there will be a pre-bid meeting and site tour, which is required in order to participate in the bidding process. Submissions must be sent by mail by January 31, 2025.

By the end of 2023, Tanzania's total installed solar capacity was 16 MW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
