Tanzania's Mwanza Receives 20.9 Billion for 56 Ongoing, New Water Projects

Posted on : Thursday , 2nd January 2025

The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) has allotted a total of 20.9 billion to the Mwanza Region for the development of 56 new and ongoing rural water projects.

RUWASA Regional Manager Engineer Godfrey Sanga made this announcement in Mwanza on Friday, emphasizing the government's initiatives to alleviate rural water shortages.

In order to pay off contractor debts associated with rural water projects, the region received 3.4 billion dollars as of December of this year. According to Eng. Sanga, the organization intends to carry out nine significant water projects in five Mwanza districts.

Kwimba (three projects), Magu (one project), Misungwi (one project), Sengerema (two projects), and Ukerewe (two projects) are the districts where the projects, which were announced in the 2024–2025 fiscal year, will be implemented.

According to Engineer Sanga, four projects totaling 1.42 billion have already been finished (three in Kwimba and one in Magu), contracts have been signed, and building has started. Five further projects totaling 1.3 billion are also underway in the districts of Misungwi, Sengerema, and Ukerewe, with two projects in each.

He continued by saying that the Mwanza region had already received 1.91 billion, of which 1.5 billion had been utilized for borehole drilling, groundwater investigation, and water quantity and quality testing.

By drilling five boreholes in each constituency, RUWASA's plan seeks to increase water access in underserved areas. The project is anticipated to be finished by the 2024–2025 fiscal year.

Since damage to water facilities results in high expenses, he advised people to preserve the infrastructure of these projects and refrain from vandalism.
