Tanzania Poised to Enter Booming Graphite Market With a New Project Launch

Posted on : Thursday , 1st August 2024

The Lindi Jumbo Graphite Mine in Tanzania is scheduled to transport its first consignment of graphite concentrate to Europe, opening up a new global jurisdiction for graphite mining. There will be other exports to locations in Asia after the shipment bound for Europe. According to Andrew Cunningham, MD and CEO of Walkabout, an Australian company, there is a strong market demand for Lindi Jumbo's graphite product, and prices are competitive. To satisfy this demand, our main goal is to keep systemically increasing output and product quality, he said. Pilot orders ranging from 20 to 80 T are regularly received, and the concentrate generated during the commissioning and ramp-up period will be used to fill them. As part of the ramp-up, the company is increasing plant throughput and intends to reach at least one-third of the nameplate production capacity by month-end.

According to Cunningham, Lindi Jumbo will produce the largest profits of any mine in the world when it is fully operational. Lindi Jumbo is still impressive, and at its current estimated operating costs, it is among the world's lowest-cost producing mines with one of the highest global basket prices. A monthly expenditure of $1.4 million to $1.5 million is anticipated for the mine when it is operating at nameplate capacity. Since most of the output would be shipped via Dar es Salaam rather than Mtwara, which is closer to the mine, the logistics costs are also 53% greater than those incurred in the DFS.
