The government is keen to continue supporting the design, development and deployment of innovative scientific technology to accelerate the translation of research into improved health.

Addressing the 30th Annual Joint Scientific Conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Vice- President, Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan, said such programmes would allow researchers to propose highly creative research projects across a broad range of biomedical field of research.

"It is high time our research institutions started planning and adopting highly innovative approaches to major contemporary challenges in biomedical research, health systems and social detriments of health," said the Vice-President when opening the 30th Annual Joint Scientific Conference.

The three-day meeting organised by the National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) goes under the theme 'Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: Investing in Innovative Research to Fill the Critical Gaps'. It brings together about 300 scientists from 18 countries.

Ms Hassan pointed out that innovative research is a vital tool in addressing fundamental gaps in research and policy issues and that innovative research will provide guidance to assist policy and decision makers.
