Spices farmers to benefit from training on packaging

Posted on : Wednesday , 5th October 2016

TANZANIA Trade Development Authority (TANTRADE) has organized a six-day training to build capacity for 200 farmers of spices and horticulture on packaging of their produce.

The other partners in the workshop that started yesterday and set to end on Saturday are Small Industries Development Organization (SIDO), Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and the National Network of Farmers’ Groups Tanzania, known in Swahili acronym as (MVIWATA).

According to a statement issued by TANTRADE’s Communication Officer, Ms Theresa Chilambo, the training will enable the farmers to comply with standard packaging materials.

“The capacity building will enable them to improve the quality and presentation of local products to meet international packaging standards and gain access to regional and global markets,” she said in the statement.

Issues to be covered during the six-day training include quality and standard packaging materials for horticulture and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, tomato and onions produced in Matombo, Mkuyuni, Mgeta and Ruaha river basin.

“In these six days, the farmers will receive intensive training on how to identify different types of packaging materials available for horticultural crops, labeling as marketing tool for both domestic and international markets.

“We hope that the workshop will enhance the capacity of horticulture and spice farmers and improve their knowledge in quality assurance to identify reliable domestic market like supermarkets, processing companies, hotels and other export companies,” she stated.

The official pointed out that through the partnership, TANTRADE looks forward to strengthen opportunities for farmers to produce valuable items to have a competitive advantage in market. The training sessions will take place at Tawa, Nyandira and Ruaha Mbuyuni.
