The governor said this during the baby gorilla naming ceremony last week. "Construction of the university which President Kagame recently promised to the citizens has started in Butaro sector, Burera district," he said while presenting how pledges made by the president are being implemented.

 

Governor Bosenibamwe added that ongoing activities to expand Ruhengeri hospital into a referral hospital are also remarkable and have started delivering better services.

 

The university is being constructed in partnership and with the support of the government of Rwanda,Harvard Medical School (USA), as well as World Health Organization.

 

Leveling the ground will last for four months and the project is to be completed after two years at a cost of $150m. Structures will be erected in three phases on 100 hectares. The first phase started on 35 hectares where there will be headquarters offices, school premises, dormitories and many others.

 

This move has expropriated 99 families who were paidRwf1.3bn before construction began. The second phase will see premises on 35 more hectares which will also expropriate residents at Rwf1.5bn, while the last phase will use 30 hectares.

 

Burera district mayor, Florence Uwambajemariya, says those who will be expropriated in the next phase will be guided on how to use their money for income generating activities and property.

 

Residents have also been urged to form cooperatives and start projects such as affordable houses for rent and shopsto cater for the many students and staff that will come in the area.

 

The province also hosts Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence, the first national cancer referral facility in rural Rwanda.
