The Stylist: Create African vibes for your home interior

Posted on : Monday , 12th September 2016

Melbourne has gone tribal. This exotic and colourful look is all about reconnecting with nature through organic forms and rustic textures – and the hottest influence is African.

Anna Weylandt, buyer for South Africa-based Weylandts furniture and interior design company, gives us her top tips for styling the look.

RELAXED APPROACH

African decor is not all tribal patterns and masks. The style is relaxed and textural and highlights the raw materials of the objects used.

EARTH COLOURS

Warm, natural colours work best as a base – think rich cream and stone and wood.

TEXTURAL INTEREST

The range of textures that can be used is probably greater than any other decor style. Leather, wood and other natural materials are essential to the look. Feathers, fabrics, hides and ceramics add layers of interest.

EXOTIC MOMENTS

Accent the space with a few small items such as patterned scatter cushions, bamileke stools and art.

OPEN SPACES

Don’t clutter. Quality pieces or large artworks give maximum impact.
