5 BEST TIPS OF SAVING ENERGY AT HOME

Posted on : Saturday , 3rd September 2016

In South Africa, over 90% of our energy comes from non-renewable resources like coal, oil, and gas, which will sooner or later will run out -  as we constantly misuse energy.

Below is top 5 ways of saving electricity in our houses.

Turn off all the unused appliances, TVs, DVDs and video machines left on Stand-By continues to consume least half the amount of electricity they use when they are turned on and switch off all the light before you go to bed because if you leaving them on they still continuingly using electricity.

Thick frost on chilling panels reduces a fridge and freezer’s cooling ability. If you do not have frost-free model, defrost your fridge or freezer when frost is between 0.6 cm and 1.3 cm thick. Constantly empty and clean your fridge, switch it off when going away for a holiday.

Monitor your geyser switch it off at night and don’t consume too much hot water more especially during winter season… the steamy shower and the long bubble bath may be fun but remember they consume too much electricity and we short of resources.

Buy energy-efficient light bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use 80% less electricity than ordinary light bulbs and last up to 8 times longer. Use low energy lamps and energy-efficient spotlights for exterior lighting.

Use solar water heater instead in that way you can save up to two thirds of the total water heating cost you build up at home. The energy saving does vary though and if you are looking to achieve the best possible results, use a geyser timer. If you cannot install a solar water heater then a heat pump is another alternative to help with power consumption.
