Buildings worth millions to come down as Naivasha-Nakuru highway expands

Posted on : Wednesday , 24th August 2016

Buildings worth billions of shillings will be brought down in Naivasha after the government embarked on expanding the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The highway authority had began marking affected buildings in preparation for the construction of the dual-carriage between Rironi and Nakuru town.

KeNHA held a meeting with affected traders at Kayole estate on Tuesday.

Officials said tens of buildings, including an upcoming mall, would have to come down to accommodate the project.

An official who declined to be names said the route had been drawn, adding that they were seeking funds to compensate affected parties.

“All the affected traders have been notified about this mega project that seeks to address the rising number of vehicles on the highway,” he said.

Lakeview MCA Simon Wanyoike who attended the meeting said traders had been caught by surprise but they supported the project.

He said the new road would ease traffic jams as many vehicles use the route especially on weekends.

One of the affected traders Peter Ndirangu admitted that the exercise caught them unawares adding that they would have to abide by the law.

Ndirangu, who owns a building next to the road, called for fair compensation noting that they had used millions of shillings to construct the houses.

“It never hit us that our buildings would one day be brought down as they are far from the main road but since it’s a government project we shall have to abide by it,” he said.
