Dr. Mailu roots for domestic resource mobilization to drive the regions health agenda

Posted on : Tuesday , 23rd August 2016

Domestic mobilization of resources will help African countries to have more control of their health agenda, Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Cleopa Mailu has said.

The CS said domestic mobilization of resources will allow prioritization of implementation areas in health within the continent.

The CS made the remarks when he held bilateral talks with the Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at the side show of the World Health Organization (WHO) 66 Regional Committee in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The CS urged Dr. Tedros Adhanom to look into how domestic mobilization of resources can be done within African countries if he is elected as Director General of the World Health Organization

Dr. Tedros Adhanom is currently campaigning for the position of the World Health Organizations Director General. This is the highest position within the WHO organization. The current Director General Dr. Margaret Chan will be completing her term in 2017.

The African Union Assembly of Heads of State endorsed the candidature of Dr. Tedros Adhanom for the post on January 2016 and the election is scheduled for May 2017 during the 70th World Health Assembly.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom has promised to make Africa his priority. ‘’Having been a Minister of Health in my country, I understand better the regions disease burden,’’ he noted.

He also promised to work closely with Kenya to replicate the home grown solutions that have been a success in providing health services to the Kenyan citizens, to the rest of the region.

‘’ If I become the next WHO Director General, I will actively involve the political leadership participation in making key decisions towards better health outcomes in Africa’’ Dr. Ghebreyesus emphasized.
