Nigeria: State Govt Awards 700 Contracts for Construction of School

Posted on : Friday , 1st April 2016

Makurdi — The Benue State Government has concluded plans to award 700 contracts for the provision of structures and facilities in primary schools. The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Philip Tachin, who announced this, said the contract would be given out on merit, adding that under his watch, the board would insist on project delivery. He explained that Governor Samuel Ortom has already approved the release of N3.8 billion as counterpart fund for the projects which would cost a total of N7.6 billion.

Tachin said the federal government would release its counterpart fund of N3.8 billion through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), stressing that the funds would be applied judiciously. "I am going to read a riot act so that all the specifics would be met."

According to him, some boreholes were paid for in the past, but they were not properly drilled, saying that such a thing would not be allowed under him because a task force has been constituted for the purpose of monitoring the execution of all the projects.

Tachin stated that payment would only be made to contractors when jobs meet specifications and are certified to have been completed
