EU funds 4.4m Zambia Power Project

Posted on : Wednesday , 24th February 2016

The European Union (EU) has given Zambia 4.4 million Euros in a financial grant for the implementation of the electricity inter-connector project along with Kenya and Tanzania.

Energy and Water Development Deputy Minister Charles Zulu said the three country-led power project was being funded by the EU in collaboration with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa.

Mr Zulu said the inter-connector project would help ease the power deficit in the region once completed.

He was speaking on arrival at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, ahead of the ninth infrastructure ministers' meeting to be held in that country this week.

This is according to a statement released in Lusaka yesterday by first secretary for Press and tourism at the Zambian Embassy in Addis Ababa, Naomi Chulu.

Mr Zulu said the grant would enable Zambia to start exporting power to East Africa and neighbouring countries, adding that the current power deficit would be overcome.

"He said Zambia will soon start generating enough power which will result in energy exports," read the statement.

Mr Zulu also disclosed that Zambia had contracted two international companies to start inland power generation activities.

He said the two companies, one from the United States of America and the other from Turkey, would also supply equipment for inland power generation.

The move would help solve the power deficit that Zambia was currently facing.
