Powered by Fonepass, U2opia Mobile's sponsored data platform is meant for subscribers with limited or no access to the internet, enabling them to explore the world of data and unlock its value at no cost for them.

 

An open marketing platform, Fonepass will allow customers to access their favorite mobile applications with no data charges and also encourage them to try out new applications.

 

The offer by MTN allows subscribers to find free data offerings on various and most popular utility apps. The platform enables users to access information on Wikipedia, Binu, Hello food, Safemoto, Tripadvisor and Library for all among others.

 

Sandeep Ganguly, Chief Executive Officer of U2opia Mobile, said information is the key to education and empowerment.

 

"We are working with MTN and the Local Global Application providers to ease the access to data via our patented Fonepass solution. U2opia would like MTN mobile consumers to try this new service from their operator and start using data services," said Ganguly.

 

Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Rwanda, Yvonne Manzi Makolo, said with internet access and smartphones now becoming more accessible in the Rwandan market, consumers now had access to literacy apps, utility apps, consumer centric services and the convenience of eCommerce that had been long enjoyed in developed markets.

 

"We are sure this partnership with U2opia mobile will enable us to roll out more services to our subscriber base and help customers enjoy services while we enrich their lives. This is an exciting new opportunity for us and most importantly, our customers," said Makolo.

 

According to a recent report, internet subscribers in Rwanda, as of September 2014, numbered slightly over 2 million.

 

An estimated 25 percent are mobile.
