Japan to fund construction of solar power plant in Africa

Japan will fund the construction of a solar power plant in Egypt in a move aimed at enhancing energy the sector in the country Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has announced.The solar power plant will be constructed at a cost of $US 100 million.

The power plant will have a capacity of 20 megawatts and will be located in the sunny Red Sea resort town of Hurghada.

In a statement released by Ismail Khairat, Egypt’s Ambassador to Tokyo they expect Japan to start funding the project in early 2016.

This marks the first cooperation of its kind in the renewable energy field. The deal will allow Egypt to take advantage of advanced Japanese technology in the renewable energy sector and will support Egypt’s vision to achieve a greener future.

Ambassador Khairat added that President Sisi will visit Tokyo in the near future to launch a number of economic and development projects between the two countries and to increase political and security coordination.

Egyptian government have been on the forefront in ensuring that power shortage is curbed in the country and in the recent months they have signed agreement with power production companies to embark on power generation projects.

The latest largest project is the Nuclear power plant which will be carried by Russia’s Rosatom and the Russian government gave the government a loan for the same.
