Construction Of The Julius Neyerere International Airport New Terminal Reaches 65% Completion

Posted on : Friday , 4th December 2015

Duth Contractor BAM International (BAM) has recently announced that construction works of the new Terminal 3 at the Julius Neyerere International Airport (JNIA) have so far reached a completion of 65%.

The license to start the construction of the new EUR 100 million terminal, was awarded by Tanzania Airport Authority (TAA) in November, 2015 and follows rehabilitation works of the Terminal 2 whose project was awarded between 2005 and 2006 for a total commitment of EUR 130 million.

According to BAM, the new terminal is meant to meet the future growth on international arrivals by extending the airport’s capacity to 6 million passengers per annum up from the current 500,000, in a total terminal area of 60,000 square metres.

The terminal’s building is expected to be completed by June, 2016 and so far installation of the cooling systems, roof, passengers boarding bridge, sewage system, fire detection systems, electricity cabling, and floor have been completed, explained Project’s Director, Eng. Mohammed Millanga.

Once the Terminal 3 is completed, Terminals 1 and 2 will be exclusively used for domestic flights, which have grown 7.4% in 2014. JNIA received a total of 2.5 million passengers resulting from the arrival of 8.9 planes per hour recorded in 2014 that made the airport to work overcapacity. With the new Terminal, TAA expects to handle at JNIA a rate over the 30 planes per hour.
