Mobius Motors to deliver Africa�s cheapest car

Nairobi-based Mobius Motors recently announced and started pre-selling its Mobius II model, which will offer drivers a highly robust vehicle capable of tackling Africa’s rough rural terrain and will, importantly, be the most affordable SUV on the market, selling for around US$11,000 (other new models usually sell for about US$23,000). It achieves this price by offering a simplified design, with non-essentials such as air-con, power-steering and even windows removed from the design.

Mobius Motors launched in 2009 in Mombasa and has built its brand around inexpensive cars, designed specifically for an African context, that use off-the-shelf parts to create durable and safe steel frames. Speaking of the Mobius II, the company claims it has “built a car around the needs of local consumers. Our vehicles have the key functionality and durability of an off-road car, fit for travelling and carrying goods for long distances on bumpy dirt roads.” The company also it is “reimagining the car; designing our vehicles around common road terrain, transport usage and consumer income profiles across the region.”

Mobius Motors received an injection of capital for the project from American billionaire Ronald Lauder’s NYC-based Pan African Investment Company (PIC), which seeks to identify and facilitate projects that promote growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. “PIC is pleased to be working with Mobius to help create value in the company while driving job growth and entrepreneurism in Kenya,” says PIC’s CEO Dana Reed.
