The construction in Tanzania of a US$ 20m fertilizer terminal near the port of Dar es Salaam which is projected to make Tanzania a regional agricultural input distribution hub is set for opening in September this year.
The construction in Tanzania of the modern revolving fertilizer terminal which will also help to make quality fertilizer more readily available to both large and small scale farmers is currently on its final stages; this was confirmed by Yara Tanzania Country Manager, Pal Oystein.
“This terminal investment is part of long-term strategic ambition for Tanzania that Yara has agreed to support building and developing Dar es Salaam’s capacity to become a national and regional fertilizer distribution hub,” he said.
Tanzania holds the greatest potential for increased agricultural productivity, but farmers need proper knowledge on best farming practices as well as infrastructure, accessible markets and necessary equipment. The construction in Tanzania of the fertilizer terminal is only a small part of Yara’s programmes in Tanzania to help create a solid base for increased agricultural productivity.
Yara’s core business of nitrogen fertilizer production is intimately connected with agricultural productivity and food production. The role of fertilizers in food production is usually underestimated. Fertilizers are food for plants and just as human beings need essential minerals and nutrients for strong, healthy growth, so do the world’s crops.
