Tanzania: TBA Out to Build Houses for Civil Servants

Posted on : Thursday , 30th July 2015

Siha — TANZANIA Building Agency (TBA) has initiated housing projects in efforts to ensure civil servants own houses. TBA Chief Executive Officer, Mr Elius Mwakalinga said here yesterday that its research has determined that many civil servants are in dire need of houses as they own none.

Mr Mwakalinga said the challenge is huge because the number of houses needed as of now is about 400,000 all over the country.

The officer said they carried out the research with The President's Office (Public Service Management) and now his agency has started the project by constructing 10,000 houses.

"We have carried out a study and now we know the number of civil servants, in which regions, at what grades and salary levels. "The demand for houses is very high because data shows that every year 30,000 civil servants are employed and are in need of houses while only 5,000 retire," said the TBA chief.

In another development, Mr Mwakalinga has ordered TBA Kilimanjaro Regional Office to ensure it hands over the building for Siha District Commissioner on the planned time.

The order follows a visit and subsequent order in April by the Minister for Works, Dr John Magufuli. Dr Magufuli who is now Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) flag bearer for the presidential post, inspected the building and discovered that it was constructed well below the required standard.
