Kenya: Sh2.8 Million Banana Project for Ungunja Farmers

Posted on : Tuesday , 19th August 2014

Farmers in Unguja will benefit from a Sh2.8 million programme that seeks to enhance production of bananas and sweet potatoes in the subcounty. Ugunja Community Resource Centre has initiated the programme.

The centre's chief executive officer Aggrey Omondi said the programme will benefit 4,075 farmers. Omondi was speaking on Thursday at Savannah Hotel in Ugunja during the launch of the programme.

He said the pilot project will be implemented in six demonstration plots after the approval of the local chiefs and other relevant stakeholders. "We intend to scale up the programme once it proves to be successful and resources are made available," said Omondi.

Omondi said they seek to link farmers with research institutions such as Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, Kenya Forestry Research Institute, World Agroforestry Centre, and Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services among others.

Ugunja deputy county commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia urged farmers to embrace crop diversification as the region has good weather patterns and arable soils.
