KENYA: Nakuru County joins hands with VEI to conserve water.

In order to conserve water in the face of shortages exacerbated by climate change, the Nakuru County Government in Kenya will profit from the knowledge of the Dutch consulting company Vitens Evides International (VEI). A partnership contract connects the two companies.

In Kenya's Nakuru County, water use by residents and businesses is expected to be reduced by 20–30% on average. The local government is relying on "intelligent" conservation of this resource, which is presently threatened by a number of factors, including climate change, to accomplish this. Nakuru will profit from the technical assistance provided by Vitens Evides International (VEI), a Dutch consulting firm with whom it recently formed a relationship. The 2005-founded business will assist the county in enhancing its water management procedures and expanding services to the underprivileged.

The Nakuru Rural Water and Sanitation Company (NARUWASCO), which provides water in rural areas, and the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (NAWASSCO), which provides water and sanitation in urban areas, will both receive assistance from VEI.

VEI will support the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (NAWASSCO), which provides water and sanitation in urban areas, the Nakuru Rural Water and Sanitation Company (NARUWASCO), which provides water in rural areas, and the Naivasha Water Sewerage and Sanitation Company (NAIVAWASS), which provides public water services in the Naivasha district.

An investment of USD 10.45 million in total

“These companies will have to formulate a policy that supports water recycling, develop cost-effective interventions and adopt relevant technologies,” says Nelson Maara, the newly appointed County Executive Committee Member (CECM) of the Nakuru Department of Water, Energy, Environment and Natural Resources. Additionally, they will advocate for the collection of rainwater, fixing water leaks, drilling deep wells with high flow rates, and recycling wastewater that has been cleaned, among other things. The goal is to prevent a sharp decline in the amount of water that is readily accessible for irrigation, drinking, sanitization, and other uses.
