AfDB loans Burundi US$29.49m for road improvement and asphalting project

Posted on : Tuesday , 30th September 2014

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a grant of US$29.49 m to Burundi to carry on with the Phase 1 of the Nyakararo-Mwaro-Gitega Road Improvement and Asphalting Project. This report was issued on Friday last week.

Infrastructure improvement works pertains to a 30-kilometre-long Nyakararo-Mwaro-Kibumbu road, an undertaking that will see the country benefit from regional trade. The new Nyakararo-Mwaro-Gitega Road Improvement and Asphalting Project is also set to open access to the region, to help the region increase trade operations with other regions in the country.

Farmers in the region are set to benefit since it will be easier to market their produce and procure inputs, once the Nyakararo-Mwaro-Gitega Road Improvement and Asphalting Project is complete. People in the region are also set to benefit from improved access to socio-economic infrastructure and will have a better opportunity to create new initiatives.

Apart from the AfDB’s support through the Nyakararo-Mwaro-Gitega Road Improvement and Asphalting Project, Burundi could also benefit from IMF’s expansion of projects from 2013’s 4.5% to 4.7%.
