Posted on : Tuesday , 3rd February 2015

A government delegation is in Turkey as part of an ongoing campaign to woo investors into the local leather industry.

Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed is heading the team that includes officials from the Export Processing Zones Authority and members of Parliament.

Private Kenyan investors are also in the trip.

While there, the delegation is scheduled to hold meetings with Turkish investors as well government officials to market the existing and new opportunities in Kenya’s leather industry.

“Kenya is offering a world class investment location with the proposed leather zone and we encourage global players based in Turkey to invest in Kenya,” Mr Mohammed said when he met with the Turkey leather industries association president, Mr Erdal Matras.

The meeting was attended by about 30 investors in tanning, footwear, garments and saddlery from Turkey.

Kenya is looking to create jobs in the industry that employs nearly 1.5 million people both directly and indirectly in Turkey.

The Ministry has announced plans to set up an integrated leather processing zone on 500 acres in Kinanie, Athi River, in Machakos County.

A team comprising of government officials and private investors is working on the master plan of the industrial centre whose ground-breaking is expected in February.
