Timely Completion of Power Projects Promised by Tanesco Power Board

Posted on : Saturday , 24th January 2015

The newly appointed Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) Board of Directors has pledged to fully support the country's power development projects and facilitate their early completion to tackle the existing electricity problems.

The Chairman of the Board, Dr Mighanda Manyahi, made the remarks in Dar es Salaam during the newly appointed Tanesco Board of Directors' visit to six power plants in the city.

Dr Manyahi pointed out that most of the power plants are expected to start their operation by June-July and this will include the Kinyerezi Power Plant. "Upon completion of Kinyerezi One Power Plant, it will have the capacity to generate 150 megawatts which will enable the Tanesco, in future, to remove some of the emergency power plants that currently are in use," said Dr Manyahi. He explained that Kinyerezi One Power Plant was scheduled for completion in March, this year, but due to financial constraints it has been forced to delay to June. "When the six power plants are switched on Tanesco is expected to operate at a low cost and will get relief from capacity charges," he said.

The Tanesco Project Manager, Mr Emmanuel Marinabora, said that most of the installation works have been completed at Kinyerezi, Gongo la Mboto, Kipawa, and Mbagala substations. "As for the City Centre Power Plant and Kurasini, completion is expected by December, this year," he pointed. He, however, explained that while undertaking those projects they were facing challenges of land conflicts in the areas that were earmarked for the projects. "Most of the people that had settled in those areas had gone to court to put a court injunction during compensations and evaluation," explained Mr Marinabora.
