Consortium to invest US$ 38m in solar power projects in Eastern Uganda

Posted on : Thursday , 22nd January 2015

A 20MW solar power plant worth US$ 38m will be constructed in Eastern Uganda to aid in the generation of electricity in Soroti and Tororo districts.

A Ugandan-Italian consortium involving Simba Telecom and Building Energy SPA and the consortium of Access and TSK Electronica of United Arab Emirates and Spain have decided to invest in this electricity generation project so as to make power more affordable to locals.

Moses Murengezi, an official in the ministry of Energy and Mineral Development confirmed the new and said that this solar power generation initiative is a positive one, as it will see Uganda’s economy grow and at the same time make power affordable to all citizens.

The first unit is expected to be channeled to the national grid by the end of 2015. The country is joining other East African allies that have massive solar power generation projects, including Kenya with its Lake Turkana Power Plant project, which will add 310 MW of power to the national grid and set to commence this February.
