Kenya: Japanese Firm to Build Organic Waste Processing Plant in Meru

A Japanese company has started talks with the Meru County government to establish an organic waste processing plant in the county.

Meiwa, a company that converts organic waste into charcoal through biomass carbonisation technology intends to set up in Meru before moving to other parts of the country.

Speaking when he met Meru Governor Peter Munya on Monday, Meiwa International manager Takeo Tokunari said the technology provides solutions to agriculture, environment and energy sectors.

Mr Tokunari was accompanied by Meiwa president Shigeru Kitano.

Meiwa is one of the 100 Japanese companies which will be exhibiting during the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (Ticad-VI) that is set for August 27-29 in Nairobi.

The company and county officials visited the Meru Town sewage treatment works and Gakoromone market where they assessed the amount of waste generated.

Mr Tokunari said the company will carry out studies on the possibility of setting up a biomass carbonisation plant.

WASTE RECYCLING

"A biomass carbonisation plant is a waste recycling plant that converts organic waste into charcoal known as biochar.

"The plant can process waste such as sludge, human waste, chicken manure, sawdust, agricultural residue, food waste and water hyacinth, among others.

"Biochar can be used as organic fertilizer, soil conditioner and fuel among," Mr Tokunari said.

Mr Munya said the county government would facilitate the company to set up operations in Meru to help in sustainable waste management.

Meru County Investment and Development Corporation (MCIDC) managing director Joel Imitira said they would start engaging the experts immediately to speed up the establishment of the plant.

"This technology will greatly benefit our fast-growing town and help improve agricultural production," Mr Imitira said.

The initiative will help the county government achieve a plan to establish a functional waste processing plant.

According to the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), the county projected to spend Sh4 billion in buying land for the plant, implementing garbage collection, transportation and processing procedures through a public private partnership.
