Ethiopia: Addis Ababa to Get New Sewerage System

Posted on : Thursday , 1st December 2016

The Addis Abeba Water and Sewerage Authority has allocated 272 million Br to construct a new sewerage system across all districts of Addis Abeba.

Some of the money will go towards installing 12 Anaerobic Baffled Reactors (ABR) across eight new condominium sites in Qality, Bole, Kara and Yeka. 144 million Br has been allocated for the construction of a pipeline across the 10 districts of Addis Abeba. The remaining 82 million Br will be provided for the installation of ABRs in place of existing septic tanks.

The ABRs have the ability to purify 1000 litres of water a day.The cost for their installation ranges from 3.5 to four million Br each, depending on the type of rock or gravel in the ground.

The authority has already begun installing the first three ABRs at the Qality district, at a 20/80 site in 'Koya Fucha'. This is the only site that will have five ABR's while the rest will have one each, due to the large number of condominiums at the site.

Last year, the Authority installed 10 mobile liquid waste treatment plants at seven condominium sites. The deployment cost the authority 759 million Br.

Currently, the city's almost 3.3 million residents are estimated to discharge 200,000 cubic metres of waste water a day.
