Tanzania: Ewura to Take Steps to Tighten Petroleum Gas Purchases

Posted on : Monday , 11th July 2016

Dar es Salaam — The Petroleum Bulk Procurement Agency (PBPA) will start to procure Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from September, the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) confirmed yesterday.

The procedure is intended to maintain the quality of imported LPG by various companies. Ewura communication manager Mr Titus Kaguo said the move was also intended to control the commodity's price.

He explained, however, that Ewura will meet with all stakeholders in the sector for discussions ahead of introducing the system.

Mr Kaguo made the revelations when Ewura launched its 2015 Downstream Petroleum Sub Sector Performance Review at the agency's pavilion at the Julius Nyere International Trade Fair grounds yesterday. The communication manager said Ewura has been facing various challenges in regulating the importation of LPG since the current system allows companies to import the commodity from different countries.

He told The Citizen that the importation of LPG has increased from 10 tonnes per year in 2009 to the current 70 tonnes.

"The report has explained a number of issues which includes our plan to start procuring LPG in bulk in order to reduce its price," he said.

In 2011, Ewura introduced petroleum a bulk procurement system. It has yielded significant benefits to the country, including lowering prices and an improvement in tax collection from petroleum products.
