The Isles president made the comments at the ongoing Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) where he noted that new technologies showcased by Vocational Education and Training Authority and Small Industries Development Organisation indicate plans for an industrial-powered economy is on good course. "Tanzania with an industrial powered-economy is possible.

 

What we need to do is to market and make proper use of the new expertise and technology," he said at the Mwalimu J. K. Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds yesterday. He observed that already, locally made products are attracting international markets, flashing the greenlight for industrial economy.

 

Dr Shein stressed the need for improvement in the packaging of all processed, saying more efforts is needed by various industrial players to improve productivity. "I made personal visits to SIDO and VETA. The new technology is indeed to move forward. But the challenge remains for Tanzanians to buy and use locally made products," President Shein said.

 

He reiterated that the same efforts have been embarked in the Isles for the last five years and that there are good signs of attaining the industrial development target.

 

"We want to transform the country into a middle income country by 2025 and we are on the right direction."

 

The statement by the Zanzibar president comes nearly two days after the Union Vice-President, Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan, launched a countrywide 'Be Proud, Buy Tanzanian' campaign to promote and market locally-made products to reduce trade gaps with imported products.

 

According to Ms Hassan, the campaign would boost consumption of locally produced products through enhanced standards, quality and packaging. She elaborated that the initiative is in line with the government's plans to transform the country into an industrial-powered economy.

 

"All local producers should register their products with Tanzania bar-code 620," she had directed. Under the same arrangement, the government will help formalise a big number of small and medium-sized businesses to effectively contribute to the national gross domestic products (GDP).
