Rehabilitation of Tanzania, Kenya and South Sudan Road Corridor Planned

Nairobi — The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has called for bids on the rehabilitation of the Isebania-Kisii-Ahero Road which is slated to start sometime this year.
According to the authority, the road project which will be carried out in two lots will have Lot 1 starting from Isebania to Kisii and lot 2 from Kisii to Ahero.
In a statement, KeNHA indicated that the Isebania-Kisii-Ahero (A1) Road forms part of the southern link of the Sirari Corridor (Tanzania-Kenya-South Sudan Corridor), which is a transit route running along the Eastern shore of Lake Victoria via Isebania to Lokichogio and onwards to Juba.
"It is the main trade route between Mwanza Port (Tanzania) and Kisumu port (Kenya) - the key trading centres within the Lake Victoria basin," it stated.
KeNHA said that through the government it had obtained financing from the African Development Bank towards the cost of rehabilitation of Isebania-Kisii-Ahero (A1) Road.
"The Isebania-Kisii-Ahero Road project traverses Migori, Homa bay, Kisii, Nyamira, and Kisumu Counties located in the shores of Lake Victoria."
The main project road is approximately 176 km with the Isebania - Kisii Lot being approximately 92 km and the Kisii-Ahero section being 84 km respectively.
It is expected that the rehabilitation of the Isebania-Kisii-Ahero Road will facilitate cross border movement of passengers and freight, further enhancing access to regional markets, and to social and economic centres as a result of the additional upgrading of the 57 km of feeder roads contiguous with the main trunk road.
The authority stated that the improved road geometrics and enhanced pavement structure will go a long way in raising the level of service for the transit traffic.
In Lot 1, the construction of roadside markets at Suneka, Nyachenge and Ranen, will be aimed at separating local traffic from the transit traffic on the main trunk road.
The proposed project is intended to rehabilitate the current 5-6m wide to a 7m wide carriageway with 2m shoulders on each side to reduce traffic friction complete with service roads in built-up locations.
The project design also entails the improvement of 57 km of feeder roads linking the project road with markets, social, administrative and educational centres such as the Nyachenge-Tabaka-Ogembo road (15km) ,Suneka-Rangwe-Imbo-Olare road (31km) and Omoya-Ndiru Road( 11km).
The relocation of the Axle load Weighbridge at Rongo is also included under the project to enhance Government's monitoring effort in controlling vehicle overloading.
Lot 2 will have a project design entailing improvement of 78km of feeder roads linking the project road with markets, social, administrative and educational centres such as the Oyugis- Kendu Bay road, Oyugis-Rangwe-road Kopany road, Ougis-Gamba road, Misambi-Ekerenyo road and Sondu-Nyabondo complex road.
